The Harbor in Dieppe

The city of Dieppe in Normandy is one of those historic passages into the various parts of France. Dieppe means “deep” which supposedly describes its river.

It used to be a part of England, and even now signs of the link are evident in the city especially its welcoming aura to the British and non-British visitors alike.

Dieppe’s sea front is lined with memorials of World War II, particularly of the infamous Dieppe Raid. The Raid refers to the 1942 attack by allied forces against the Germans occupying the port. The Dieppe Raid, which was meant to bluff the Germans, caused the lives of the offensive team who were mostly Canadians.

Most of the objectives of the Dieppe Raid were not accomplished, even costing lives and resulting to injuries and imprisonment of allied men.

However, the historic event bonded the ties even more between Dieppe and Canada, whose links began during the colonization of the New World where the Dieppe port was made as a departure point for French Canada. Read more about Dieppe….
